SOUNDING MOTION

2015-2019

Sounding Motion (SoMo) was an interdisciplinary investigative and collaborative art project in which the mediation tunes and informs the corporeal and in which dance, space and music contribute to the generative performance environment.

SoMo –method was developed during a year-long artistic research period that led to the creation of performance Excerpts (prem. 4.9. 2015). It was later utilised in improvisatory dance practice, workshops, and several performances. The method uses specifically crafted pressure sensors and sound synthesis that enables a dancer to compose a musical score out of their physical movements. In the method technological means (sensor data mapped and computed into sound) enable simultaneous improvised movement and music composition which constitutes a ’sonic dancer’, where the dancer expresses and thinks not only though-the-body but also through the sound she creates. The SoMo –method focuses on highlighting kinaesthetic awareness and self-reflection in improvised dance and performance practice. It gives the dancer the power to define how she/he moves, sounds, and communicates during a generative performance. In addition, the method offers the audience an additional sensory modality to hear the movement which is presently happening, and through this multimodality experience kinaesthetic empathy and interpret contemporary dance.

an ongoing PRACTICE of dance improvisation & sound augmentation

A multidisciplinary group of artists worked for several years (2015-2019) with developing the Sounding Motion dance practice and created multiple artworks using specifically designed interactive artifacts consisting of body-placed sensors, digital sound triggering, and synthesizing tools in Max/MSP to allow the generation of sound to inform the improvising dancers in performance.
