Moving Digits

2018-2020

Moving Digits: Augmented Dance for Engaged Audience was an EU-funded 2-year project (2018-2020)with aims to enhance audience understanding and engagement in contemporary dance performances, and to allow them to experience dance in an augmented way. The project also involved dancers, choreographers, and technicians with further tools for expression, archival, and analysis. The project partners were Madeira Interactive Technologies Institute (M-ITI, Portugal – Lead Partner), Hochschule Düsseldorf (HSD, Germany), and Sõltumatu Tantsu Lava (STL, Estonia). Plux(Portugal), Tanzhaus NRW (Germany) and University of Greenwich (UK) as associated partners.

During the Modi Project, the participating artists were exploring various novel technologies and developed expressive choreographic compositions.
My thematic thread was connectedness. Under the title Connection Retrieval together with Stephan Jürgens, Raul Masu, and Jochen Feitsch we explored meaningful ways to use real-time sonic and visual augmentation to accompany improvised score-based composition.

Technically, we were using live motion capturing coupled with digital audio and video synthesis tools to create visual and sonic layers, constructing a poetic narrative in dialogue with the dance.
You can find videos of demo performances and more documentation on the project website, along with several research publications on HCI and dance.
The project ended with an online seminar on key findings and lessons learned.

MoDi seminar presentation discussing the ontological shift in choreographic practices when working within digital technology and interactive artefact-mediated performance.
